RUNON.
robotic fitness companion
(2021)
A Smart Fitness Device concept. Runon is a jogging pacemaker that rolls ahead and leads the user. It provides personalized feedback and guidance to help runners get the most out of their exercise.

This project was completed in collaboration with Seung Hwan Ra, Da Young Sun, and You Jin Kim.

Personalized feedback sets the pace of the runner's exercise; from a projected display, on-screen display, mobile app, or headphone audio.

The integrated display shows workout metrics and instructions.
Camera sensors respond to the runner's real-time performance.

A fingerprint sensor provides personalized control of the pacemaker.
A high-power projector casts workout information onto the ground in front of the runner.

Posture feedback, route information, and pace guidance are projected before the runner.

The charging cradle wirelessly charges the pacemaker when not in use.

The Runon app allows the user to program jogging routes, set goals, and choose exercise modes for a totally customizable experience.

Gaming and challenge modes offer a way to keep an exercise routine exciting. I produced animated interactions based on the app design developed by teammate Da Young Sun.

what did I learn?
The most valuable aspect of this project was the opportunity to work with designers from South Korea. The ability to work effectively in a team - regardless of where its members come from - is a skill that I constantly seek to refine. Differences in culture and language at times presented obstacles, but the effort spent in understanding one another resulted in a deeper appreciation of our unique perspectives and allowed us to better execute our concept.
